 (I) GIFTS

THREE important collections of stuffs from the burying grounds of Egypt came into the market during 1917. Through the generosity of various donors, useful selections were made for the Department. The chief was a large hanging, with tapestry-woven ornament in coloured wools and linen thread, consisting of two tall pilasters with a head in a medallion above each, and a vertical row of blossoms between (PLATE 17). It belongs to the late Græco-Roman period, probably the fifth century : and it is one of a set of four hangings discovered in 1898-9 at Shaikh Shatâ, on the borders of Lake Manzala, about two miles east of Damietta. This important specimen was given by Messrs. Restall, Brown, and Clennell.

  • ثانياً من كتاب:  ",VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, DEPARTMENT OF TEXTILES CATALOGUE OF TEXTILES FROM BURYING GROUNDS IN EGYPT, VOL. I. GRÆCO ROMAN PERIOD, BY A. F. KENDRICK (1), LONDON: PUBLISHED UNDER THE AUTHORITY , OF HIS MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE 1920, P14. "

M. Gayet's excavations at Antinoë and El-A'zâm have already been referred to. Remarkable success also attended his work in the Delta region. The village of Shaikh Shatâ lies about two miles to the east of Damietta, on a promontory jutting into Lake Manzala, a locality distinguished in history as the site of a camp of the Crusaders, M. Gayet dug here in the winter of 1898-9. Amongst the stuffs he found were two very remarkable examples now in the Museum (see No. 22). The nature of the soil in the Delta is not generally conducive to the preservation of textiles ; and, in addition to their artistic interest, these two pieces stand out as thc only stuffs from the Delta in the Museum.
